Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
one year
What is your primary product or service?
locally grown blackberries
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
Scottie is a retired engineer, and Janet is a retired teacher. We both enjoy horticulture and cooking. We started growing blackberries to make blackberry jelly for gifts. The berries and jelly were so popular with our friends, we decided to expand and offer fresh blackberries to the public.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Punkin Center Berry Farm is the only pick-your-own blackberry farm in McLennan County. Our berries are rated by others as the "biggest and sweetest berries" they have ever tasted.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
We have only one location at 1785 Waldo Road, located northwest of McGregor. We have recently expanded our acreage; we will see if the market will support our production.
Provide detailed directions to your location
Traveling west on Highway 84 from Waco to McGregor, continue through McGregor. Two miles out of McGregor, turn right onto Farmview Parkway, which is FM 938. Travel 4 1/2 miles to Waldo Road. Turn left onto Waldo Road and continue to 1785 Waldo Road. You will see our home, a tan brick house and the berries on trellises.
What type of payments do you accept?
We accept cash or check.
Which areas do you service?
We welcome visitors from all over Texas. Last year, we had pickers from Dallas, Fort Worth, and Houston.
Who owns your company or runs daily operations?
The farm is owned and operated by Scottie Scott and Janet Walters Scott.
What are your hours of operation?
During harvest, the farm is open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. everyday. It is always best to call before coming to make sure that the berries are plentiful on any given day.
What is the best compliment anyone can give you?
"We had a great time picking berries at your farm."
What is your favorite quote or Bible verse?
"With God, all things are possible."
